Russian educational institutes
are looking at India with renewed interest. With 5150 students, India
ranks fourth among all the countries sending students to Russia and
94% of the Indian students there study medicine. Here is an exclusive
interview with Prof. Mikhail Kalinkin, Rector, Tver State Medical Academy,
a front-ranking medical institute in Russia, which has the largest number
of Indian students among all educational institutions there.
TIRUCHI: A home away from home is what Russian universities promise for Indian students aspiring to pursue Medicine and Engineering programs.
Most of the 22 students who attended the Counselling and Spot Admission program jointly conducted by the Russian Centre of Science and Culture and Study Abroad here on Friday were keen on taking up Medicine. Alexey N. Sergeyev, Deputy Dean for Foreign Students, Tver Medical State Academy, admitted eight students on the spot.

The emphasis on the meritorious qualities of higher education in Russian universities and other institutions, particularly beneficial to Indian students, was reiterated by a visiting delegation at a press conference, jointly organized by RCSC and the Russian Centre of International Education (RCIE) on May 19, 2009.
The most advanced one standard-wise and comparably cheaper one
cost-wise, the degrees and diplomas recognized abroad, coupled with
English apart from Russian, as medium of instruction,
were the major highlights and unique features that the delegation
underlined regarding Russian higher education. The eight-member Russian
delegation, led by Prof. M. N. Kalinkin, Rector, Tver State Medical Academy, participated in the two-day «Educational Exhibition-2009», jointly organized by the RCSC and RCIE, for the benefit of Indian students seeking admission to higher education in various specialties such as medicine,
engineering, aviation, polytechnic, electronics, computer science,
etc., under different Russian universities and other higher educational
institutions in Russia. Underscoring the steadily-growing popularity of higher education in Russia, Prof. M. N. Kalinkin, Rector, Tver State Medical Academy, said that Russian universities attract a large number of foreign students from all over the world every year. So far, over 90, 000 foreign students, among them 40, 000 Indian students, have successfully completed higher educational courses in Russia. He added that medicine, engineering, Russian language and humanities are the subjects mainly chosen by foreign students. Apart from having highly qualified scientists and professors, the institutions offer much cheaper cost of higher education than in countries such as the US, the UK, etc. The members of the delegation stressed that Russian medical universities have been rated at a high level by UNESCO and WHO. Bilateral economic and commercial ties between Russia and India in such fields as space research, engineering, electronics, bio-chemistry, technology, medicine, etc., require a large number of well-trained personnel, and as such higher education obtained by Indian students in Russia will further enhance bilateral cooperation and promote mutually-beneficial partnership.
