he Helmholtz Zentrum München has always placed a high value on promotion and support of the next generation of scientists. A new coordinated programme of support will further increase the attractiveness of our research centre for qualified PhD students and provide them with optimum working conditions. In 2006, the Helmholtz Zentrum München has awarded scholarships for doctoral studies within the Helmholtz research fields ‘Earth and Environment’ and ‘Health’.

As an interdisciplinary research centre, the Helmholtz Zentrum München offers excellent possibilities for study and would like to create a campus atmosphere for its postgraduate students in which they can identify themselves with the Helmholtz Zentrum München and the Helmholtz Association. To achieve this, the PhD students are offered a programme of specialised institute and interdisciplinary meetings of high scientific quality which facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience between the different programmes of the Helmholtz Zentrum München. In addition to the scientific training, the programme supervisors also value the communication of knowledge in related areas like making scientific presentations, preparation of project proposals, and project management.

Doctoral studies at the Helmholtz Center Munich are generally planned to last three years. During this time, the student is paid a salary based on the scale for EG 13/2 (approximately 1000 euro monthly net).
